Legend has it that Herman Upmann was a banker who much preferred cigars to finance! In 1844 he decided to purchase a cigar factory and launch a brand under his own name. Still going strong today this brand is nearly 180 years old.
This brand has a strong British link as in 1922 the then bankrupt business was purchased by J Frankau & Co (now Hunters & Frankau ltd – the UK’s sole Cuban Importer). In 1935 the brand was finally in Cuban hands as it was purchased by Menéndez Y Garcia, the then owners of Montecristo.
H.Upmann’s blend is made from tobaccos grown in the Vuelta Abajo region. Gold medals in no less than eleven international exhibitions during the 19th century adorn the boxes – as does Herr Upmann’s personal signature. The brand today comprises a wide range of sizes which are a firm favourite amongst cigar enthusiasts around the world.
